    韓国の伝統的な姓は数百種類しかなく、Kim、Lee、Parkだけで人口の半分近くを占めます。それぞれの姓は先祖の出身地によって本貫（bon-gwan）と呼ばれる氏族に分かれ、金海金氏（Gimhae Kim）や全州李氏（Jeonju Lee）などがあります。姓はほぼすべてが一音節でひとつの漢字で書かれ（Namgungのような二音節の姓はまれです）、名の前に置かれます。女性は結婚後も姓を変えません。
