To be clear from the start: this generator does not output surnames of characters from Star Wars. The names are invented here to fit the same broad space-opera sound: short and punchy for pilots, clipped and formal for aristocrats, rough for smugglers, and unfamiliar for non-human species. Sample results include Vantrell, Kessar, Antaris, Brigg, Oshara and Threx. All of them are original and none belong to any existing franchise character.

The five tags and what they sound like

Pilot names are short, with one or two syllables and a hard consonant: Skyrne, Kessar, Torvak, Kelrick. They are easy to shout over a crackling comm channel. Noble names are longer and softer, often with a Latin or French echo: Vellamore, Corvantis, Kaldoran. They suit senators, heirs, diplomats and anyone who owns more than one starship and has never flown either.

Outlaw names sound worn and a little ugly: Slagg, Scraggs, Dreggan, Brigg. Mystic names use long vowels and gentle consonants: Kaelith, Ondrel, Oshara. Alien names break English phonetics on purpose with doubled letters, unusual clusters or apostrophes: Krrsh, Vok'tarr, Yrxx. Choose the tag that matches the character's role and let the sound do the introduction before the character does anything.

Naming a crew or a squadron

A good crew has contrast. Give the captain a noble or outlaw name, the pilot a pilot name, the navigator a mystic or alien name, and the mechanic something blunt. When the names sit next to each other on a cast list, they should already look like different people with different histories. Generate a few batches and pick the best name for each tag.

For squadrons or families, pick a shared sound. Names that end in the same consonant read as a unit without being identical: Torvak, Caddock, Kelrick. The same trick works for noble houses, where a shared prefix or ending signals kinship, and for a species, where a shared cluster of letters marks the language. Keep a short list of these rules so your names stay consistent across sessions or chapters.

Tabletop games and fan fiction

Tabletop space-opera games move fast and need many NPC names. Generate a batch of twenty before the session, sort it into one column per tag, download the TXT and tick names off as they appear. For fan fiction, original names for original characters are the norm, and this generator keeps you clear of canon. Modify results freely; they are free to use and need no attribution.

If you are writing your own space opera rather than fan work, shift the spelling and combine tags so the names belong to your setting. Nothing here is tied to any particular universe, and the tags are broad enough to fit most science fiction with a heroic tone, from pulp serials to military campaigns to quiet stories about a single freighter crew.
