    Native scripts included
Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Arabic and Indian names show the original script next to the romanization.
    Real filters that matter
Alliteration, length limits, rare-only picks. The controls are built around how writers actually choose names.
    Fast and private
No account, no tracking of what you generate. Saved names live only in your browser.

What is a last name generator?

A last name generator is a tool that suggests surnames at random so you do not have to invent one from scratch. Writers use it to name characters, gamers use it for avatars and NPCs, parents use it to test how a surname sounds with a first name, and developers use it to fill databases with realistic placeholder people. This last name generator goes further than a plain list: every surname comes with its meaning, its cultural origin and, where the culture uses one, its native script.

The database currently holds more than 6,800 surnames from 20 origins: over 6,300 real surnames from 19 cultures, plus about 470 original fantasy names. Separate sets of original wizarding-style and space-opera names cover fiction. The real surnames were compiled from census publications, historical records and etymological dictionaries, then curated and checked for duplicates and consistency.

How to use the random last name generator

The generator opens on English surnames. Pick another origin from the dropdown, or choose "Any origin" to draw from every culture at once. Then set the filters that matter to you: a first letter for alliteration, a last letter, a length band, and whether you want common or rare names. Choose how many results you want and press Generate. Each card shows the surname, its meaning and the origin it comes from.

Type a first name into the optional field and every result turns into a full name preview, so you can hear how "Maya Whitlock" or "Kenji Kagawa" actually sounds before you commit. Click the heart to save a name to your list, the copy icon to copy one name, or Copy all and Download to grab the whole batch as text.

Filters that make the results useful

Most surname tools give you ten random names and a reload button. The filters here are built for how writers actually work. Starts with and Ends with let you match a naming pattern, for example every member of a family sharing an initial. Length filters keep names short for a character sheet or long for an aristocratic feel. Popularity filters split the list into everyday names you would hear at a bus stop and rare names that make a character memorable.

For characters from Japan, Korea, China, Russia, Greece, the Arab world and India, the tool shows the native script next to the romanised form. That means you can write 山本 in a manuscript, use Yamamoto in dialogue, and know both refer to the same family.

A last name generator with meanings, not just a list

A surname carries history. Smith and Schmidt both mean a metalworker, Kowalski and Ferrari do too. Yamamoto means the base of a mountain, Papadopoulos means the son of a priest, Al-Haddad means the blacksmith. When you know what a name means, you can choose one that quietly reinforces a character: a hardened soldier named Armstrong, a scholar named Bookman, a wanderer named Walker.

Meanings also matter for parents and genealogists. A family that wants to honour a grandparent can find surnames from the same region with a related sense, and someone researching their own name can see the etymology at a glance before digging into records.

Fantasy, character and first-and-last name generators

The fantasy last name generator holds hundreds of original surnames tagged as noble, elven, dwarven, dark, nature or warrior, so a Dungeons and Dragons party can be named in one sitting. Separate pages cover elf surnames, medieval surnames, royal houses, American surnames and original wizarding-style and space-opera names for fan fiction.

Need a whole person, not just a surname? The first and last name generator pairs each surname with a first name from the same culture and lets you filter by gender. The last name generator based on first name works the other way round: type a first name, and the tool recognises its origin from a list of 900 given names and suggests surnames that fit.

    Fast, free and private

The site is a static page that loads in well under a second on a phone. Generation happens in your browser, so nothing you type or generate is sent to a server. Saved names live only in your browser storage. There is no account, no sign-up and no limit on how many names you can generate.

The generator, the origin pages and the site pages are available in eight languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Korean and Italian, with the same surnames on every version. Surname meanings are shown in English, and the themed generators and last name lists are in English only. Use the language switcher in the header to change the interface.

    Who uses a surname generator

Novelists and screenwriters are the biggest group. A name that fits the period and place saves a paragraph of explanation, and a rare surname keeps two characters from blurring together. Game masters use the fantasy and DnD pages to name an entire tavern of NPCs in a minute. Developers and QA testers use the random first and last name generator to seed databases with names that look like real users instead of Test User 1. Parents-to-be type the first name they like and try it against surnames from their own heritage. Genealogy hobbyists look up the meaning of a family name before tracing it through records. Cosplayers, streamers and role-players use it for alter egos and gamertags.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a last name generator?

A last name generator is a tool that suggests surnames at random, usually filtered by culture or style. This one adds the meaning and origin of every name so you can choose one that fits a character, a pen name, a game persona or a baby name.

Is this a random last name generator or can I filter?

Both. Set the origin to "Any origin" for fully random surnames from 20 cultures, or filter by origin, first letter, last letter, length and popularity to narrow the list to exactly the style you need.

Does the last name generator show meanings?

Yes. Every surname shows its meaning and etymology, for example Smith (metalworker), Yamamoto (base of the mountain) or Papadopoulos (son of a priest). Names from Japan, Korea, China, Russia, Greece, the Arab world and India also show their native script.

Can I generate a first and last name together?

Yes. Type a first name to preview full names with any surname, or use the first and last name generator page to pair random first names with surnames from the same culture, with a gender filter.

Are the surnames real and can I use them in my book or game?

All origins except fantasy contain real surnames in use today. Surnames are not copyrighted, so you can use any name you generate here in fiction, games, role-play, test data or as a pen name without attribution.

Is there a fantasy last name generator?

Yes. Choose the Fantasy origin, or open the dedicated fantasy, elf and DnD last name generator pages for original surnames tagged by style: noble, elven, dwarven, dark, nature and warrior.

Does the site store what I generate?

No. Generation happens in your browser. Saved names are kept in your browser storage only and never sent to a server.
