    Korea has only a few hundred traditional surnames, and Kim, Lee and Park cover nearly half the population. Each surname is divided into clans (bon-gwan) by ancestral town, such as Gimhae Kim or Jeonju Lee. Almost all surnames are one syllable written with one hanja (two-syllable ones like Namgung are rare), and they come before the given name. Women keep their surname after marriage.

    Because so few surnames exist, characters are told apart by two-syllable given names. Romanization varies: Lee, Yi and Rhee are all the same name, as are Park and Bak. The hangul form is shown for accuracy.
