    Polish

Polish surnames are famous for the -ski and -cki endings, originally meaning "of" a place or estate and once a marker of nobility, now shared by a third of Poles. Patronymic endings -wicz and -czyk (Mickiewicz, Kowalczyk) and occupational names (Kowalski from kowal, smith) are also common. Surnames change with gender: Kowalski for a man, Kowalska for a woman.

Always use the feminine -ska or -cka form for women. Names ending in -wicz feel eastern or older; -ak and -ek endings feel rural and plain.
