Scots-Irish roots and Appalachian surnames
In the 1700s, tens of thousands of Presbyterian settlers from Ulster, known in America as the Scots-Irish, landed in Pennsylvania and moved south along the Great Wagon Road into the Shenandoah Valley, the Carolinas and the mountains of Tennessee and Kentucky. They brought Lowland and Border names such as Campbell, Crockett, Graham, Johnston, Armstrong, Elliott and McCoy, plus Ulster forms of Irish names. These families shaped the culture, speech and music of Appalachia.
Border names are especially distinctive, since many came from the lawless Anglo-Scottish Border region: Armstrong, Elliott, Graham, Irvine, Bell and Nixon. Mountain communities stayed small and isolated for generations, so a few names can dominate a whole county. The Hatfields and McCoys of the Kentucky and West Virginia border are the best-known example, but every hollow had its own cluster of Shelton, Cantrell, Sizemore or Blevins families.
Tidewater, planter and Lowcountry names
The coastal South was settled earlier and differently. Virginia's Tidewater and the Carolina Lowcountry drew English gentry, younger sons of landed families and many indentured servants in the 1600s, and their names read as English: Randolph, Carter, Byrd, Lee, Harrison, Pinckney, Rutledge and Middleton. Many of these surnames later became first names too, which is why Carter, Harrison, Randolph and Tucker feel so Southern on a birth certificate.
A large share of Southern surnames are also carried by African American families, who make up a major part of the region's population. Many took or were given English surnames during or after slavery, which is why Johnson, Williams, Jackson, Washington and Jefferson are common across the Deep South. The South also includes French names in Louisiana, Spanish names in Florida and Texas, and German names in the Texas Hill Country.
Tips for the Southern last name generator
The right name depends on which South you mean. A Kentucky coal town suggests Scots-Irish and English names like Sizemore, Combs or Caudill. A Charleston or Savannah family with old money leans toward Pinckney, Middleton or Habersham. A Mississippi Delta town might mix Johnson, Lee and Whitfield with Italian and Chinese names from families who arrived in the late 1800s. Choosing the region first makes the generator results far easier to use.
Use the common setting for names that fill any Southern phone book, and rare for the distinctive mountain and planter names that give a character a strong sense of place. Southern families often use surnames as first names, so try pairing results with first names like Carter, Wade, Lorena or Beau. Copy the list or share the link with your writing group before you settle on the family at the center of your story.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a last name sound Southern?
Mostly its history. Many names common in the South came from Scots-Irish settlers in Appalachia or English families in Virginia and the Carolinas. Names like McCoy, Crockett, Randolph and Pinckney carry that association because of the families and events tied to them.
Does the Southern last name generator include African American surnames?
Partly. Surnames such as Washington, Jefferson, Jackson and Johnson are widely carried by African American families across the South, but this pool focuses on regionally distinctive Southern names, many shared by Black and white families alike. For names like Washington and Jackson, try the African American last name generator on this site.
Where does the name McCoy come from?
McCoy is a Scots-Irish surname from the Gaelic Mac Aoidh, son of Aodh, a name meaning fire. It is related to Mackay and was brought to America by Ulster settlers. The feud with the Hatfields in the late nineteenth century made it the most famous name in Appalachia.
Are Southern surnames different from Northern ones?
There is overlap, but the South has a higher share of Scots-Irish and early English names, and fewer names from the later waves of Irish Catholic, Italian, Polish and Jewish immigration that shaped northern cities. Louisiana is a separate case, with its French and Cajun names.
