    Many Dutch families only adopted fixed surnames when Napoleon required it in 1811, which is why the Netherlands has so many descriptive and geographic names with prefixes: van (from), de (the), van der and van den (from the). De Jong, De Vries, Jansen and Van den Berg are the most common. Under Dutch rules the prefix is written lowercase after a first name (Jan van den Berg) and capitalised when the surname stands alone.

    A "van" name is not a marker of nobility, unlike the German "von". For a Flemish (Belgian) character the prefix is usually capitalised and often fused: Vandenberg, Vandeputte.
