    French bynames appeared around the 11th and 12th centuries and slowly became hereditary. The 1539 Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts made parishes record baptisms, which helped stabilise them, and a 1794 law required everyone to use the name on their birth record. The largest groups are first names turned surnames (Martin, Bernard, Thomas, Robert), occupations (Lefebvre, Fournier, Mercier) and descriptive nicknames (Petit, Legrand, Roux). Regional forms are strong: Le- prefixes in the north and Brittany, Occitan forms in the south.

    Nobility is signalled by "de" plus a place name (de Montmorency), but ordinary names also contain de or du (Delacroix, Dupont). Occitan names like Fabre, Delmas and Pujol place a character in the south.
