    The most common Armenian last names and their roots

    The names at the top of the list, including Grigoryan, Sargsyan, Harutyunyan, Petrosyan, Hovhannisyan, Khachatryan, Hakobyan, Vardanyan, Karapetyan and Gevorgyan, nearly all come from Christian given names. Many honour saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Grigor recalls Gregory the Illuminator, who brought Christianity to Armenia in the early 4th century, and Sargis is the warrior Saint Sarkis. Hovhannes is John, Hakob is Jacob or James, Petros is Peter and Gevorg is George.

    Others carry meanings of their own. Harutyun means resurrection, and Khachatur means given by the cross, from khach, cross. Karapet means forerunner, a title of John the Baptist, and Mkrtich means baptist. Vardan recalls Vardan Mamikonian, who fell at the battle of Avarayr in 451, and the name also echoes vard, rose. Avetis means good news, Arakel apostle, Galust coming and Manuk child, all tied to church feasts. Reading down the list is almost like reading a church calendar.

    Trades, titles and places in Armenian names

    Trade names are especially common among Western Armenians, whose families lived in the Ottoman Empire. Many use Turkish trade words with the ending -jian: Kazanjian is a cauldron maker, Terzian a tailor, Boyajian a dyer, Kuyumjian a goldsmith and Demirjian an ironworker. Eastern Armenian names use Armenian or Persian words, so Darbinyan comes from darbin, smith, and Najaryan from a word for carpenter. These names often reveal a family's craft several generations back.

    Titles and nicknames add colour. Melikyan comes from melik, a local prince, and Aslanyan from aslan, lion. Babayan comes from baba, father or elder. Mnatsakanyan comes from Mnatsakan, the remaining one, a name often given to a child who survived when siblings had not. Asatryan comes from Asatur, God-given, Baghdasaryan from Baghdasar, the Armenian form of Balthazar, and Hambardzumyan from Hambardzum, Ascension. Some families also took place names ending in -tsyan, such as Vanetsyan, from Van.

    Tips for spelling and searching the list

    Armenian has its own alphabet, created by Mesrop Mashtots in the early 5th century, and there is no single English spelling. Hovhannisyan also appears as Ohanian or Hovannisian, Sargsyan as Sarkisian or Sargissian, and Khachatryan as Khachaturian, like the composer Aram Khachaturian. Western Armenian often swaps letter pairs, so Petrosyan becomes Bedrosian and Grigoryan becomes Krikorian. If a diaspora spelling does not appear, try switching p and b, k and g, or t and d.

    Names also changed under outside rule. In the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, some families used Russian forms such as Arutyunov for Harutyunyan, and older Eastern forms ending in -ents or -unts still appear. For a character, the -yan spelling suits a family in Yerevan, the -ian spelling a family in Beirut, Paris, Los Angeles or Glendale, and a -jian trade name a family whose ancestors came from Anatolia.
