Punjabi last names from Jat clans

Many familiar names come from Jat clans, called got or gotra. Sandhu, Sidhu, Gill, Dhillon, Grewal, Brar, Randhawa, Bajwa, Cheema, Virk, Mann, Sekhon, Dhaliwal, Bains, Chahal, Aulakh and Kang are all clan names. A clan name connects a family to others who share it, and traditionally people did not marry within their own got. In Gurmukhi, Sandhu is written ਸੰਧੂ, Gill ਗਿੱਲ and Dhillon ਢਿੱਲੋਂ.

Several of these clans are found among Sikh, Hindu and Muslim Jats, since the clans existed before the religious divisions of later centuries. Sandhu, Cheema, Bajwa, Randhawa, Virk and Gill are common in both Indian and Pakistani Punjab. Clan names are closely tied to particular districts, and many families can name the village their clan settled in generations ago, which makes these names especially useful for family history.

    Khatri, Arora and artisan lineages

Another large group comes from Khatri and Arora communities, historically associated with trade, administration and scholarship. Kapoor, Khanna, Malhotra, Mehra, Sethi, Chopra, Tandon, Bhalla, Kohli, Anand, Bedi and Sodhi are well known examples. Some Sikh Gurus came from Khatri families, and Bedi and Sodhi are linked with the lineages of Guru Nanak and Guru Ram Das. Many of these families moved to Delhi after 1947.

Ramgarhia families, historically carpenters, blacksmiths and builders, carry names such as Matharu, Bhogal, Panesar and Kalsi, and many settled in East Africa and later Britain. Saini and Kamboj families have farming roots. Ahluwalia comes from the village of Ahlu, the home of a Sikh ruling family. When you read a Punjabi surname, it often tells you something about a family's traditional occupation or home area.

Singh, Kaur and names across the border

In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh asked Sikh men to take the name Singh, meaning lion, and women the name Kaur, often translated as princess. The names were meant to express equality and set aside caste distinctions. Many Sikhs use Singh or Kaur as a surname, while others add a clan or village name after it. Some families abroad use Singh as a shared family surname for convenience, even for women.

Punjabi Muslims, most of whom live in Pakistan, often use titles or community names such as Chaudhry, Malik, Arain, Rajput or Butt, alongside clan names shared with Sikh Jats. Spellings vary a great deal, since Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi sounds do not map neatly onto English. Dhillon may appear as Dhilon, Grewal as Garewal and Sidhu as Sidu. Check all versions when searching records or the list above.

    Frequently asked questions

Are Singh and Kaur Punjabi last names?

They are Sikh names given by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699, Singh for men and Kaur for women. Many Sikhs use them as surnames, while others treat them as middle names and add a clan name. Singh is also used by some Hindu and Rajput families outside Punjab.

What is a got or gotra?

A got is a clan that traces descent from a common ancestor. Punjabi families often carry their got as a surname, like Sandhu or Grewal. Traditionally, people avoided marrying someone of the same got, and clan names often point to a region or group of villages.

Why are Punjabi names spelled in so many ways?

Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi contain sounds that English letters cannot show exactly, including tones and retroflex consonants. Families and clerks chose their own spellings, so Dhillon, Dhilon and Dhillion can all be the same name. Emigration added further variations.

Do Sikh and Muslim Punjabis share any clan names?

Yes. Clans such as Sandhu, Cheema, Bajwa, Randhawa, Virk and Gill are found among both Sikh and Muslim Jats. These clans existed long before the religious and political divisions of recent centuries, so families on both sides of the border share them.
