Mongolian last names and the words inside them
Because most Mongolians use a father's given name in the surname position, many of the names in the list are really personal names with clear meanings. Bat means firm or strong, Erdene jewel, Gan steel, Tömör iron, Altan golden, Chuluun stone, Enkh peace, Bold steel and Naran sun. Names are often compounds, so Batbold is firm steel and Enkhtuya is peaceful ray. Learning a handful of these elements lets you read the meaning of many names at a glance.
Some names were chosen to protect a child. In the past, families who had lost children sometimes gave names meant to confuse evil spirits, such as Nergui, meaning no name, or Enebish, meaning not this one. These names later passed into patronymics, so a person may carry one in the surname slot today. Buddhist names borrowed from Tibetan and Sanskrit, such as Dorj and Tseren, are also common and carry religious meaning.
Clan names from the many peoples of Mongolia
The clan name, or ovog, links a family to a wider lineage. Borjigin, the clan of Chinggis Khaan, is by far the most chosen, but the list also includes names tied to other peoples of Mongolia. Oirat groups in the west include the Torguud, Dörvöd, Zakhchin, Ööld and Bayad, while Buryat families in the north have their own clan names. Many Khalkha families took names from old clans such as Khiad, Jalair or Uriankhai.
Other families chose clan names from local features, trades or recent history rather than ancient lineages. Some took the name of a mountain, a river or the district where they lived. A well known example is the cosmonaut Gürragchaa, who chose Sansar, meaning space, as his clan name. The Kazakh minority in Bayan-Ölgii follows its own naming customs, so names from that community look different from Khalkha ones.
Passports, genitive endings and name order
In Mongolian, the father's name comes first and takes a genitive ending, usually -iin, -yn, -ийн or -ын. The former president Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj is Elbegdorj, son of Tsakhia. In conversation people use the given name, and the patronymic is often shortened to its first letter, as in Ts. Elbegdorj. The clan name, if used at all, comes before the patronymic and appears on identity documents.
Mongolian passports list the patronymic in the surname field, without the genitive ending. So Elbegdorj travels as Elbegdorj Tsakhia, and abroad he may be listed as Mr. Tsakhia even though Mongolians would never call him that. This regularly causes confusion in international sport and business. If you are naming a Mongolian character, decide which convention your story follows and use it consistently.
Frequently asked questions
What do Mongolian last names usually mean?
Most names used as surnames are a father's given name, so they carry the meanings of personal names: iron, steel, gold, stone, strength, peace or the sun. Clan names are different and usually refer to an old lineage, a people or a place rather than a quality.
Why does a Mongolian name end in -iin or -yn?
That is the genitive case ending, meaning of. When the father's name is placed before a person's own name, it takes this ending, so Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj means Elbegdorj of Tsakhia. Passports usually drop the ending and write the father's name alone.
Did Chinggis Khaan's clan name survive?
Borjigin, the clan of Chinggis Khaan, was revived when Mongolians were asked to register clan names around the turn of the twenty-first century. Many families with no documented link chose it, so it is now very common and does not by itself show descent from the great khan.
Which name goes on a Mongolian passport?
The passport shows the given name and, in the surname field, the father's name without its genitive ending. The clan name may appear on internal documents. Abroad, this means Mongolians are often addressed by their father's name, which feels unusual to them.
