Common Thai last names and their meanings
The names that look most familiar are the short ones built from popular words. Srisuk (ศรีสุข) means glorious happiness, Thongdee (ทองดี) good gold, Boonma (บุญมา) merit comes, Boonmee (บุญมี) having merit, Jaidee (ใจดี) good heart, Somboon (สมบูรณ์) complete and Meesuk (มีสุข) having happiness. Short names like these are especially familiar in rural areas and in the northeast, where many families registered simple, cheerful names. Because several families could choose similar words, these shorter names repeat more than long ones.
A small set of word pieces unlocks much of the list. Boon (บุญ) means merit, Thong (ทอง) gold, Sri (ศรี) glory or splendour, Suk (สุข) happiness, Charoen (เจริญ) prosperity or growth, Kaew (แก้ว) crystal or jewel, Chai (ชัย) victory and Wong (วงศ์) lineage. Kham (คำ) is often read as gold in northern and northeastern usage. So Charoensuk is prosperous happiness, Kaewmanee crystal gem, Chaiwong victorious lineage and Saengthong golden light.
Patterns worth noticing as you scroll
Length is one clue. Short names such as Boonma or Khamdee tend to belong to families who registered early or in the countryside, while long names with four or five syllables often belong to families who registered later and needed something no one else had. Many Thai families of Chinese descent built long Thai names, sometimes weaving in a syllable that echoes their Chinese clan. Others kept the clan name itself with the prefix Sae, meaning surname, as in Sae-Tang or Sae-Lim.
Some families carry names that point to nobility. Na Ayutthaya (ณ อยุธยา), meaning of Ayutthaya, is used by descendants of royal lines. Similar names with Na and a province, such as Na Ranong, Na Songkhla and Na Chiangmai, were granted to families who governed those places. Words taken from Sanskrit and Pali, like Prasert (excellent) and Sawat (well-being), give many names a formal, old-fashioned tone. You will rarely find a Thai surname with a negative meaning.
Tips for spelling and searching Thai names
There is no single way to write Thai in English letters. The official system gives Sisuk for ศรีสุข, but many families write Srisuk or Srisook, keeping letters that are silent in speech. Boonmee may appear as Bunmi, and Thongdee as Tongdee. When a name is missing from your search, try oo for u, th for t, ph for p and ee for i. The Thai script shown in the list is the most reliable way to confirm that two spellings are the same name.
In daily life Thais rarely use surnames. People go by their first name, often with a nickname, and a surname appears mainly on forms and in the news. For a character, a short everyday name like Jaidee or Srisuk suits a family from the provinces, while a long name suits a Bangkok family or one of Chinese descent. If you create your own, stick to auspicious words, since that is how real Thai surnames are formed.
Frequently asked questions
What do Thai last names usually mean?
Nearly all express good wishes. They combine words for merit, gold, happiness, glory, victory and prosperity, often taken from Pali and Sanskrit. A name like Suksawat means happiness and prosperity, and Thongdee simply means good gold.
What does Boon mean at the start of a name?
Boon (บุญ) means merit, the good that comes from generous and moral acts in Buddhist thought. It starts many names in the list, such as Boonmee, Boonma, Boonsong and Boonthong, and it signals a family's hope for good fortune and a good life.
What does Na Ayutthaya mean in a surname?
It means of Ayutthaya, the old royal capital. The name is used by descendants of members of the royal family whose titles faded over the generations. Seeing it usually tells you the person has royal ancestry, even if they live an ordinary life today.
Why do some Thai families use the prefix Sae?
Sae (แซ่) is the Thai spelling of the Chinese word for surname. Some Thai families of Chinese descent kept their clan name in this form, giving names like Sae-Tang or Sae-Lim, instead of registering a new Thai surname. Many later changed to a Thai name.
